Wiltshire is an ancient County. Its boundaries today differ little from when the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086. However, it was not until 1889 that the County – in common with others in England and Wales – became entitled to an elected Council having power to provide various services for Wiltshire citizens.
Maintenance of the main roads and the bridges on them became the duty of the County Council and whilst in the early years maintenance materials would have been hauled by horse and cart, the internal combustion engine was soon discovered to provide a more effective and economic means of transportation. The County Council bought a variety of trucks during the nineteen twenties. The model Crossley is in the Council’s modern highways livery of golden yellow and bears the Coat of Arms granted to the Council in 1937 together with the words “Wiltshire County Council” in the house style adopted by the Authority in its Centenary year.
